Genealogy Information and Requests
The Town of Buxton is fortunate to have a great deal of research material and records available dating back to 1748. We have Marriages indexed from 1777 to the present, Family Records dating from 1748 to 1892, and our Vital Statistics, (containing births, deaths, and marriages) which are also indexed from 1892 to the present.
We have Cemetery Records which consist of information listed on the Monuments, and Burial Permits for the present years back to 1926. Some of the early burial permits are missing.
Our Valuations and Inventories date back to the mid-1700s. These contain information on land, buildings, livestock, equipment, etc.. We are still in the process of restoring records from 1945 to the mid-1960s. Also available are Militia Records, School Records, and Road Records.
We encourage people to do their own research and allow them to use the volumes under supervision. We supply a table, chairs, etc. The staff will make photocopies of most records. However, we do not like to photocopy from our handwritten Family Record Volumes. Copies of these records are available in large notebooks that can be photocopied. We have a library of family histories, and town histories, that were donated to the town and are available for research. We can supply a list of these histories upon request.
Also available are copies of two restored Daniel Dennett Maps:
- 1852-53 Map with Homeowners’ Names $8.00
- 1870 Range Map (Proceeds go to Buxton-Hollis Historical Society) $10.00
A copy of these maps is available for viewing, and photocopying sections, if needed.

(Back to top)Marriage Licenses
To obtain a license to be married in the State of Maine one must first record their intentions to marry with a municipal clerk. If the bride and/or groom are residents of Maine they must file their intentions at the municipal office in which one of them resides. If neither the bride nor groom is a resident of Maine they can file intentions in any municipally. Both parties must sign the intentions, stating they are free to marry.
If the bride and/or groom has been married before and is divorced or widowed, a certified copy of the documentation showing how the last marriage ended is required. Once the intentions are filed and the license is issued the bride and groom are free to marry anywhere in the State. There is no waiting period before the license can be issued.
The license can be issued the same day the intentions are recorded. The process to record the intentions and to receive the license typically takes about 20 minutes. The fee to obtain the marriage license is $40.00. The marriage ceremony must take place within 90 days from the date the intentions are filed. It is the responsibility of the person that performs the ceremony to return the completed license to the municipal clerk that issued it within 7 days.
- Certified copies can then be obtained from the municipal clerk at a cost of $15.00 for one and $6.00 for each additional certified copy.
If you need additional information, contact a municipal clerk’s office at 207-929-6171.

Annual Election Results
- Contact John Myers, Buxton Town Clerk for current results 929-6171.
Absentee Voting
What is absentee voting?
- The process of absentee voting allows you to cast a ballot without going to the polls on Election Day.
Who can vote absentee?
- Any registered voter may cast an Absentee Ballot instead of voting in person at the polls on Election Day. You don’t need to have a specific reason or be unable to vote at the polls on Election Day to receive an absentee ballot. However, it is important to note that there is a time limit on when the voter can get the ballot; there is an open and closed period with specific instructions. For more information on this, please contact the Buxton Town Office at 207-929-6171.
What are the steps to vote by absentee ballot?
- Complete an absentee ballot application and deliver it to your municipal clerk to get a ballot; then fill out and deliver the ballot back to your municipal clerk.
When can I request a ballot?
- You can request an absentee ballot up to three months before Election Day.
How do I apply for and receive an absentee ballot?
- The easiest way to vote absentee is to go to your municipal office and vote absentee in person in the clerk’s office. Go to Town Hall, tell the clerk you want to vote absentee, complete the ballot, with envelope and return it to the clerk. Absentee ballots are available 30 to 45 days before the election. You will not need to complete an application if you vote in the clerk’s office.
- Another easy way to apply, and receive an absentee ballot, is for you to telephone your municipal clerk’s office to have a ballot mailed to you. Voters can only call for their ballot. A voter cannot request a ballot for another voter by telephone. If you are a registered Buxton voter and wish to receive a ballot by telephone request call (207) 929-6171 weekdays or (207) 929-5806 after hours, including weekends; or complete an absentee ballot application and deliver it to the municipal clerk to receive a ballot.
- Applications are available from the municipal clerk or online. Buxton Registered Voters mail completed applications to: Buxton Town Clerk’s Office, 185 Portland Road, Buxton, ME 04093-6532.
- You may obtain a ballot for an immediate family member by completing the above application and delivering it to the municipal clerk.
- Or you may complete an absentee application requesting that a “third person” (someone other than the voter or the voter’s immediate family member) obtain and hand-deliver an absentee ballot. You must designate, in a written request or application, the specific third person who will handle and deliver the ballot. Only this designated third person may handle the absentee ballot. Ballots cast in this way must have the envelope witnessed by either a notary public, a municipal clerk, a clerk of courts, or two other witnesses. The “third person” can be one of the two witnesses.
- Be sure to make your request early to allow enough time for the ballot to be mailed to you.
When must my voted ballot be returned to the municipal clerk?
- Voted absentee ballots must be received by the municipal clerk by 8:00 p.m. on Election Day to be counted.
What if I still have questions?
- If you have another question, call the Buxton Town Clerk’s Office at (207) 929-6171 or ask by email. You may also contact the State of Maine Election Division by calling (207) 624-7650 or by visiting their website.
